Metallica, Rage Against the Machine to play major English summer festivals

Metallica, the biggest metal band in the world, have been announced as co-headliners of two of the biggest music festivals in the UK, the Leeds and Reading Festivals this August in England. They will share the main stage at the festivals which will be held August 22-24 with Rage Against the Machine, The Killers, Queens of the Stone Age, Bloc Party, Tenacious D, The Raconteurs, The Fratellis and Slipknot.

This adds to Metallica’s already busy summer schedule, during which they will be playing in some of the biggest festivals all over the world. They have only one U.S. date scheduled so far: at Bonnaroo, which is being held June 12-15 in Manchester, TN. These festivals will probably be where they unveil a good chunk of the new material from their highly anticipated upcoming album, which is still untitled.

Rock N Roll Therapy: Eyes Set to Kill aim to kill your pain

Is religion getting in the way of your feelings for someone of the same sex? Are you trying to stop your friend from possibly ending her life? These questions are no laughing matter, which is why we asked guitarist Metal Greg and singer/guitarist Alexia of Eyes Set to Kill to deliver some advice for this edition of Rock N Roll Therapy.

Geewpatsbrenu290: I’m known for being the girl who likes a lot of boys according to my friends but the thing is that I never told them (most of them) that I have a major crush on my bff who is a girl. She is the only girl that I have liked and I am christian and my mother has shoved so much religion down my throat that now I am deathly scared of being looked down upon from God because of this. I found it unbearable to keep this to myself so I told the girl I like that I am attracted to her and she seems okay with it but never really brings it up. I can’t get her to tell me how she really feels and we can’t talk about it often without feeling awkward and my other friends finding out. What do I do?!.

Metal Greg: I would honestly sit down and think to yourself what’s more important: Her friendship or a possible relationship between you two. Obviously it seems weird to her that you like her and could possibly ruin your friendship. If her telling you how she really feels about you is more important than your friendship, then just ask her how she feels about you. But if her friendship is more important, then I would look elsewhere for a relationship.

Luvsrr: My friend has always had a hard lif. She has to constantly do things for herself and feels like the is walking through life alone. The other day she told us she was going to kill herself, and what worried us the most is that she doesn’t lie.  We tried hard to make her feel better and it sort of worked. She is still really unhappy and we don’t know what to say to make it better because none of us have ever been though the things she is going though. What happens if the next time we can’t convince her otherwise?

Alexia: A lot of people go through that point in their life where they feel unappreciated and feel that the only solution would be to not feel the pain at all by ending their life. Even though times are hard for her you should help her remember the things about life that are worth living for. Look online or maybe call a hotline for help. (You can reach Teen Line at 1-800-TLC-TEEN) Also, whenever I feel down I read lyrics of a song that relate to my issues and almost every time that makes me feel better. Everyone goes through hard times and there are many ways to get through them.

Fingerxcrossed: I’ve realized that the person who I thought was my best friend really isn’t. She’s been telling a few of my other friends that she’s mad at me and thinks I hate her. She keeps saying to me, “I’m having a lot of issues right now” but when I ask her what’s going on, she refuses to tell me. On the other hand, I trust her completely and tell her everything. I’ve realized that unless she can trust me, I’m no longer trusting her. I don’t know if I can still be friends with someone who won’t even tell me if she has a problem with me. What should I do about this situation?

Metal Greg: That doesn’t sound like a friend to me. I would try one more time to talk to her. Tell her how you feel and if that doesn’t work, stop being friends with her. A friend is someone you can depend on and trust at anytime. Life is too short to involve yourself with fake people. There are tons of wonderful true people out there, your friend doesn’t seem like one of them.

History of Metal: 1979 – Motorhead, Saxon, Iron Maiden start a new wave

As you may have read earlier this week, the New Wave of British Heavy Metal is going to get some retrospective love in the near future via a new DVD, “Iron Maiden and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.” But what’s the genre all about?

Motörhead had released their first full-length in 1977 but didn’t start to receive serious attention until the release of Overkill and Bomber in 1979. The albums, considered by most to be two of their best, saw the speed-metallers doing what they’ve always done, which is play “fast and loud”. The punk explosion had died down in the UK by this point, and focus was back on bands who could play their instruments. Motörhead took the raw energy and aggression of punk, and combined it with their sheer musical ability to marry the two styles in what would be an extremely influential move for metal.

Saxon also released their self-titled debut in ’79, althought it was a far cry from their next few albums which are all defining masterpieces of the NWOBHM.

Which brings us to Iron Maiden. Normally, I have only been including full-lengths in this History of Metal saga, but Iron Maiden is such an important band that this demo (The Soundhouse Tapes) – which features early versions of songs that would show up on later releases -  must be noted. It was Maiden’s first official release, despite having been a band since 1975. Despite its unpolished sound quality, it can already be seen that Iron Maiden were the unquestioned leaders of this new movement. Already present were Steve Harris on bass and Dave Murray on guitar, joined by Paul Di’Anno on vocals and Doug Sampson on drums. Murray and Harris were already standout musicians, with Dave putting out a tour de force performance as the only guitarist of Maiden at the time (Maiden is famous for having twin guitars).

Another influence that punk had had on metal by this point was on the business side of things. Metal bands adopted the DIY (Do It Yourself) sentiment that was prevalent in punk. Bands started shooting up all over the place, putting out records on labels of their own creation. The NWOBHM spread like wildfire and would EXPLODE in 1980, one of the greatest years in the history of metal.
