The Treasure Island Music Festival 2009 Headliners Leaked: Girl Talk, Flaming Lips, MGMT, MSTRKRFT

Treasure Island is this magical musical festival that takes place on Treasure Island over the bridge from San Francisco. Last year this was my favorite festival I attended, this year I don’t expect any festival will compare to Sasquatch Festival, but hopefully it can at least live up to it. Anyway enough rambling, after-all the lineup leaked and I want to share what I found out.

(this picture was taken last year, see the full gallery here)

If MGMT, MSTRKRFT, Girl Talk, Flaming Lips and The Decemberists are really truly booked for this year, then this is certainly an indication of how AWESOME the 2009 Treasure Island Music Festival might just be. Treasure Island Music Festival is set to take place on October 17th and 18th. For all the details on the festival visit the website.

If you are not into the indie and electro scene of music then you want to sit this festival out, because Treasure Island only holds about 10,000 people (if that) and trustafarians, wanna-be hippies, petruli wearing druggies are just not allowed.

The full line-up is scheduled to be announced on July 13th, so hang tight. Meanwhile browse through the photos from last year.

Selena Gomez Wants Taylor Swift To Date Jonathan Cook

Doesn’t the headline kind of say it all? Anyway, yeah, ever since teenie Selena became all tight with Forever The Sickest Kids (she sang on their song, “Whoa Oh”) she is taking initiative to make love connections.

According to E! Sickest frontman Jonathan Cook says, “Selena suggests girls for me to date. And she told me she has to approve of any girls that I date.”

Selena connected Cook and his celebrity crush T-Swift via iChat.

Sounds a bit suspeciously cutesy on the part of Cook and Gomez, doesn’t it? But Selena’s country-pop bestie is a legal 19 years old, while she is about a month away from her 17th birthday. True love waits ’til it’s legal?

Shame on me, I shouldn’t be starting rumors. But can you see J-Cook and Taylor Swift as an actual item? I can’t get an appropriate mental image.

Discuss.

Lily Allen: Better As A Blond?

Someone has been steppin’ out in a blond wig lately. Does this look suit her, or should she just keep it real?

Ex-Evanescence Band We Are The Fallen Debuts

Ex-members of Evanescence along with American Idol alum Carly Smithson made their debut today as We Are The Fallen. In front of sixty or so record industry executives, cameramen, and members of the press, the band took the stage at SIR in Hollywood and performed two songs—their first single “Bury Me Alive” and Evanescence’s “Going Under.”

Smithson gave Amy Lee of Evanescence a run for her money. While “Bury Me Alive” had a similar sound to Evanescence material, it was performed flawlessly. Smithson, clad in all black and combat boots, reached every note effortlessly. Both catchy and intense, “Bury Me Alive” is a hit in the making.

Unfortunately, We Are The Fallen didn’t offer another original single and instead resurrected Evanescence’s “Going Under.” While “Going Under” is a favorite among Evanescence fans, it came as a disappointment that the band paid homage to the past in their official debut.

Such has been of concern to Evanescence fans. Although it is inevitable that We Are The Fallen’s sound will be similar to that of Evanescence, some are wary that the band may be a carbon copy, with the exclusion of Lee. Even the band name has caused controversy among Evanescence fans who believe that We Are The Fallen alludes to Evanescence’s first album “Fallen.” When asked in the Q&A after the performance if the name made a “statement,” Moody replied:

“We had actually been talking about the band name a lot for a long time and it just really seemed like We Are the Fallen…it just seemed like a really good idea to encompass all of our fans that we already had with our previous band and I guess make it more of an inviting thing for all the fans to come in and be a part of something rather than just be a fan of a group.”

The name has even encountered drama outside the realm of Evanescence. Originally called The Fallen, the band had to rename to We Are The Fallen due to potential trademark infringement.

To hear “Bury Me Alive” in its entirety, head over to wearethefallen.com and be one of the first 100,000 fans to receive a free download.

What do you make of all this? Is We Are The Fallen a better or worse Evanescence?

Fueled By Ramen Potentially Filing For Bankruptcy

According to an article on mi2n.com t(w)een favorite Fueled By Ramen maybe be filing for bankruptcy.

A source says the financial expenditure going into these bands has not so far proved profitable and that in an effort to keep the label above water, there is currently talk of dropping several bands or bankruptcy could be a conceivable outcome for Janick and Co.

Other labels have show intrests in some bands like This Providence and VersaEmerge. Tours are still scheduled for multiple bands through the summer, even though there hasn’t been any word yet about Hey Monday‘s speculated arena tour, The Academy Is will be performing at Six Flags stages across the country. It is possible that if the label doesn’t drop bands and/or increase sales soon, they may face bankruptcy this fall. Even though some other labels have shown interest in some of their bands, a lot of the bands on Fueled By Ramen could end up with out a label. So far Cobra Starship‘s new cd and The Cab‘s new EP (which you can stream now on purevolume.com), are still on track for release.

I think this is tragic and if any of these predicted things happen I might become clinically depressed and hide in a hole until it gets better.

Here We Go Magic Opened For Grizzly Bear At The Wiltern And They Created Magic

With very little energy after a week of back to back concerts I ventured to the Wiltern last night to catch Here We Go Magic and Grizzly Bear. After seeing Here We Go Magic at SXSW this year I was completely sold on Luke Temple putting aside his solo singer-songwriter projects for a group effort of ambient trance music with soothing layered vocals. Last night was one of those shows where the opener should have been the headliner just to sustain the Friday night energy.

It’s always a buzzkill when the headliner of a show can’t evoke the same energy from a crowd as the opener. Grizzly Bear is a beautiful show and wonderful listening experience (one of my favorites), but at 10:15 pm on a Friday night after dancing to Here We Go Magic, I personally needed something a little more lively. Last summer I caught Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings at the Hollywood Bowl and Feist headlined. We should have all been provided butt pillows, because after Sharon Jones got us dancing our booties off, Feist managed to 1,2,3,4 put us into a blinking state of sit down at trying to stay awake to listen. Last night was somewhat similar of an experience for me.

Here We Go Magic created a rouse out of the Wiltern, everyone was in awe at the instrumentals and the beautiful vocals of Luke Temple. I heard more Sufjan Stevens and Sigur Ros in Here We Go Magic last night then I had realized before. The majority of the songs performed by Here We Go Magic kind of make you feel like you are underwater and you should have a snorkeling mask on, because of all the bubbles popping up around you. Particular tracks are unavoidably foot stomping, hip shaking movers like ‘Fangala’, ‘Tunnelvision’, ‘I Just Want To See You Underwater’ and ‘Only Pieces’.

Hopefully big things will happen for Here We Go Magic, allowing them to experiment more and progress through the trendy ambient electro sound happening right now. Watch the video to get a feel for their music if you are not familiar.

Now one of my new favorite quotes that I saw written on a Here We Go Magic piece of merch t-shirt:

“Let The Bones Do The Work” – Luke Temple
