The world of folk music has taken quite an interesting turn as it introduces many familiar faces to the stage. Seen on-screen and on the runway, these celebrities are strumming their guitars and singing their hearts out in efforts to one day be compared to some of their folk predecessors: Dylan, Mitchell, and Guthrie.

New Music Video: Ratatat “Mahalo”
June 9th, 2010
Music This video pretty much looks like something your dad would film on a family vacation if your family happened to vacation near a river in SouthEast Asia. Truth be told, the boatride is kind of boring but in combination with the lovely music the whole thing is sort soothing. And we love electronic duo Ratatat, (check out MissMalibu’s “Almost Famous” write-up about the band) so we give the video a thumbs-up. You can watch it below:
You can download their new album LP4 from ITunes.
Daft Punk Takes on Star Wars for Adidas
June 8th, 2010
Music
In “Things that are Incredibly Awesome” news, Daft Punk was tapped by Adidas to do the music for their new commercial, which takes place at the Mos Eisley Cantina from Star Wars (no bigs). Most of the originals are featured, including Han Solo, R2D2, CP30 and sourpuss bartender Wuher (don’t ask how I know that).
Amongst the aliens cameos are made by Snoop Dogg, Ciara, Noel Gallagher, David Beckham, Jay Baruchel, and a handful of others, including the aliens that are Daft Punk. The music is rad, the splicing of the original footage with the new celebs is flawless, and watching Snoop Dogg brandish a light saber is strangely pleasing to the soul (much more so than watching him hang with Speidi). You can watch the video below:
NEW VIDEO: Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro”
June 8th, 2010
Music Lady Gaga has created another short film in the same vein as Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and Guns & Roses’ “November Rain” epics. The self-proclaimed monster is back with a homoerotic, avante-garde military themed music video directed by Steven Klein, a high-profile fashion photographer whose clients include Madonna, Brad Pitt, and Dolce & Gabbana. And it makes perfect sense– Gaga is already a global fashion icon and muse much like Madonna circa 1984 (Exhibit A: the GAGAKOH video for MAC and the genius art deco Gaga comic book).
Is it controversial? Yes. Is it utterly over the top? Muy. But this is GAGA. In the words of one of her classic tweets:
ladygaga So many will try to destroy me. So many, over and over, coming in periods of greatness. But in this period, I cannot be broken: GAGAKLEIN.
Word, girl.
Is the video too much or can she get away with it? Is Gaga our generation’s Madonna?

Almost Famous: RATATAT
June 7th, 2010
Music
Ratatat, the mastermind electronic duo that was born on a Macbook in 2004, is finally back to up rush your headphones with their fourth album, LP4. The album was recorded in the same session as the tracks on LP3, which is most evident in the addictive synth and bendy guitar riffs that keeps the pulse of the album. However, LP4 is anything but a replica—Mike Stroud and Evan Mast have summoned the orchestra, and the result is effectually Krautrock on safari.
The album’s opener “Bilar” builds like a film score and takes off into a digital jungle of cascading percussion and jangling embellishments faintly reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s “Money”. The opening symphonic steadiness that tides in and out of the album draws comparison to Godspeed You Black Emperor!, but instead of diving deeper into the austere, Ratatat journeys into flourishing melodies a la Kraftwerk’s Computer World, Liquid Liquid’s classic self-titled, and the crystal-clear layerings of Tortoise.
Make no mistake– the distorted percussion and vintage Ratatat synth are present throughout the album, but there are no definitive stand alones like “Wildcat” or “Loud Pipes”. In place of singles there are wild tribal drums, gossamer non-sequiturs, cryptic violins, and wandering Mafioso harpsichords that the duo manipulates to various moods from eerie to nostalgic to totally visceral.
LP4 is proof that Ratatat has what it takes to evolve creatively, and their new direction is well worth the ride. Dive in, kiddos.
Dowload the album from iTunes, stream the whole thing from NPR, and see the drugged out parrot video for “Party With Children” right here. xo

New Video: Neon Indian “Sleep Paralysist”
June 6th, 2010
Music Reblogged from yasfx

The new video from fuzzy electro-pop outfit Neon Indian (one of our SXSW “buzz bands“) is busy, colorful, trippy, and all sorts of awesome. Directed by directing team Focus Creeps and set in Lexington, Kentucky, the video features weird mini teletubby things, heavy holograms, and plenty of levitation, all adding to the dream-like nature of the song. So what if it makes no sense? You can watch the video on AOL, and watch the making of video below:
